Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Specialist to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for our staff. This crucial role is essential for maintaining compliance with South African health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will exhibit meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adhere to stringent deadlines. We require an individual with a composed demeanour who can manage workplace accidents and incidents effectively, providing clear instructions on the best course of action. This role includes incident management, compensation, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Health and Safety Management:
    • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with South African regulations and industry best practices.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
    • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other relevant legislation.
  2. Training and Awareness:
    • Design and deliver tailored health and safety training programs for call centre operations, covering emergency procedures, ergonomics, and safe work practices.
    • Create and distribute safety communications and updates to keep employees informed about health and safety issues.
  3. Incident Management:
    • Manage workplace accidents and incidents by investigating, documenting findings, and implementing preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
    • Maintain records of incidents, near misses, and safety inspections, and prepare reports for internal and regulatory review.
  4. Emergency Preparedness:
    • Develop and implement emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures, first aid, and fire safety protocols.
    • Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure employee preparedness for emergencies.
  5. Compliance and Documentation:
    • Hold regular health and safety meetings with representatives.
    • Arrange training for representatives based on organizational needs.
    • Monitor the validity of health and safety certifications and coordinate necessary refresher training.
    • Ensure all documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with South African health and safety regulations.
    • Prepare and submit required health and safety reports and documentation to relevant authorities.
  6. Collaboration and Support:
    • Collaborate with HR, facilities management, and other departments to foster a culture of safety and well-being within the call centre.
    • Provide guidance and support to managers and employees on health and safety issues and concerns.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric with a recognized qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years’ specialist experience as a Health and Safety Officer/ Specialist, or related role within a call centre environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of South African health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in health and safety management software and tools.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
